The Jumbo Gathering of Minneriya

As the long dry season in the arid zones of Sri Lanka reaches its peak in August and September withering the water halls in the forests; the elephant herds find themselves on the banks of Minneriya tank within the perimeters of Minneriya National Park for food and water.

The water levels of Minneriya reservoir, built by King Mahasen nearly 1500 years ago, too reduce drastically exposing a part of the tank, where fresh grass grow.  The fresh grass and enough supplies of water attracts more than 300 elephants including tuskers, who gather on the banks to eat, bath, play and frolic on the banks of Minneriya,  creating the largest elephant gathering in Asia.
